ABOUT US

Hello. Here's a bit about who we are and what we do at Thumbprint Books.

LARRY ADAMS. I enjoy visual beauty and the process of incorporating it into stories. My primary work at Thumbprint Books includes marketing, shaping/editing the written material, book design and layout, photo touch up, and print facilitation.

For years I have used Photoshop as a hobby photographer, and have experimented with handbound books for personal projects. I developed technical experience in design and publishing software while working as a layout editor and writer of technical publications for 9 years at Motorola. I applied those skills to marketing and other materials while working for 25 years with a land developer and community builder on Bowen Island, British Columbia.

I think of myself as an “artisan” who uses software tools to shape the raw materials of story and photographs into attractive books. I feel wonderfully alive when my hands, heart, mind, and imagination are working on a project.

SYLVIA ADAMS. I love listening to people’s stories, and asking questions that prompt other memories.

Growing up overseas, I treasured handwritten letters from friends and relatives. During our trips home to Canada to visit, I would record my grandfather’s stories on cassette tape. My long-held interest in people’s oral and handwritten stories finds expression in each book project.

“WE KNOW FROM personal experience what it’s like to capture a family’s story in time, and what it’s like to have missed it. We were able to interview Larry’s parents about their lives and their families of origin—and shape the interviews and scanned photos into a book—before Larry’s father died. Unfortunately we were not able to interview Sylvia’s parents before they died; however, we were able to scan many family photographs and label them with Sylvia’s father and aunts before they passed away, and we have three chapters of a memoir that Sylvia’s grandfather started along with some articles he wrote, so that part of Sylvia’s family story is available to future generations. We encourage you to capture your family story while you can.” — Larry & Sylvia Adams
